Painting your nails is relaxing and it makes a great wind down activity for the evenings.

During your night chill time, you definitely want to engage in relaxing activities like painting; however, painting your nails too close to bedtime can result in bedsheet imprints in your nails.

Nail polish gets imprints in it when it hasn’t had enough time to dry before your nails touch other surfaces.

While you can go to sleep after you paint your nails, it is usually best to wait 1-2 hours before heading to bed once your manicure is finished.

Even with this generous time window, depending on the humidity, how thick your polish coats are and the drying agents in the polish, you still might wake up in the morning with bedsheet lines on your nails.

Avoid ruining your manicure while sleeping.

Follow these steps:

  • Complete your manicure to the last coat of color

  • Before heading to bed, let it dry to the touch

  • When you wake up, seal your manicure with a quick dry top coat

Here’s before and after photos of this process  -

As you can see, apply your top coat in the morning to totally erase bedsheet lines.

You can sleep after painting your nails. Simply do your manicure to the color, stop there and go to bed.

If you’ve already done your full manicure with the top coat before bed and you still wake up with lines, simply apply a new layer of top coat.

Reapplying the top coat in the morning will also cover and smooth out any bedsheet lines, but it can waste money, product and time - since you’re applying your top coat twice.

If your nails are prone to show bedsheet lines and you love doing your nails before bed, continue on with your ritual, but apply a quick dry top coat in the morning and it will save you money, product and time in the end.

To recap, to avoid lines in your manicure when sleeping:

  • Complete your manicure to the last coat of color

  • Before heading to bed, let it dry to the touch

  • When you wake up, seal your manicure with a quick dry top coat
